AT THE FORESTS END

Elmhurst

The truth is that.. nobody at the sanctuary really knows where Elmhurst came from. He was always just there - either grazing in the pasture, or deep within the forest. The other horses tend to give him a wide berth, whether from respect of his (unknown) age, or out of prey-driven instincts of fear.

Even though he seems intimidating, he commands respect from the younger cobbs. The newborns trot along his hoofprints and jump with joy whenever he lowers his head to sniff them.

Hywel had taken to calling him "Elmhurst", after following the wandering horse to a great Elm tree that sits in a clearing at the forests end. The name stuck with the other riders.
