ID-0075: Giddy Up, Buttercup

Maura arrived on a bright spring morning, and even as a foal she kept a permanent grin on her muzzle. From her first wobbly steps she’s been the horse that gets the whole herd moving when the gate opens, driven by an energy that spreads to everyone around her. She’s content with simple pleasures—a fresh bucket of water, a warm patch of sun on the fence line, and the rustle of meadow grass in a gentle breeze. When a new rider enters the barn, Maura is the first to nuzzle the hand, offering a soft “hello” that eases nervousness.

Because she’s still young and untrained, Maura’s excitement can turn into sudden darts across the pasture at the sound of a distant dog or a gust of wind, her mane flashing like a banner. Yet she remains gentle, never intending to startle. Each sunrise she trots to the fence and gives a brief whinny that sounds like a greeting to the day, and when she’s content she chews grass in a steady “pop‑pop‑pop” rhythm that can be heard from the barn. She prefers the faint scent of shoe‑polish, will nuzzle freshly polished boots, and often leads a game of tag by nudging a companion and sprinting away. Her high stamina lets her trot for half an hour without tiring, and she learns cues quickly, but over‑excitement can lead to bucking or sudden sprints that might surprise an inexperienced rider. She’s sensitive to loud, unexpected noises and can be mildly stubborn when a task feels dull, opting instead to chase a butterfly. One of her favorite seasonal moments is the first snowfall, where she watches the flakes at the fence and tries to catch them with her nose.
