Me and my friend Billy were new here in the region. We had moved into an old farm we were renovating, just at the edge of a forest. We have spend the first 2 weeks getting used to our new surroudings, meeting our neighbors and making new friends. After a bit of walking around in the forest, we had realized that there was another old farm, broken down and empty, just a few hundered meters behind our yard. When we first walked up to it, we saw that there was a fenced in horse, looking upset and neglegted. He seemed to be lonely, hungry, and wild. With fear in his eyes he had followed our every step along the fence of his pasture, making sure to stay just far enough away, so he felt safe. He had bells in his tail, presumebly from his previous owners, to hear where he was walking around, or even escaping.
As it got darker, and the moon rose, we walked home, but the little pony hasnt had left our minds. The big, scared eyes, the scruffed fur, and lonely apperance had burned into our brains. So the next day, Billy and I had returned, with fresh water in a bucket and with an arm full of hay. We continued to visit the pony over the next days, and he seemed to calm down around our presence. It didn't seemed as if anyone else was taking care of him, the farm being cold and empty, with no soul seeming to even step foot on the area around it. The next time we had driven into the nearest village, we had started to ask the people living here, if they knew about this horse. In hindsight, that was probably a mistake, we had realized, but that shall be told much later in the future.
Nobody wanted to really answer our questions, who lived on that farm, and who the pony belonged to. Everyone tried to lure us into other topics, just to get away from our questions. But we stayed persistant, and after quite a while, we got a name. "The old Bert", the people said, "He lived on that Farm. You can try to write him a letter, about wanting to buy his pony..". So we left the village, and at home wrote him a letter. The people have told us, that the old Bert seemed to still check on his old mailbox, and the pony apparently, so we threw the following letter into the mailbox at the broken down farm in the woods, the next time we had visited the pony.
"Dear Bert,
We are Jody and Billy! We moved in to the farm next to yours just 2 weeks ago! As we took a walk though the forest, we found your farm and encountered your pony. We wanted to ask, if you would be inclined to possibly accept an offer for him. He seems like a lovely pony, and we wanted to buy another pony in a few weeks to keep him company, as soon as we renovated our stable.
Thank you, Jody and Billy :)"
We had waited anxiously, for days, for weeks, not knowing when, and if, the old Bert would come to check his Mailbox. After nearly losing hope, while continuing to visit and feed the little pony, with him getting more and more happy to see us, the letter one day dissapeared from the mailbox. We prayed, that Bert came to get it, and would read and answer us soon.
In the meantime, we continued to visit, feeding the little cob we called affectionately "Strubbel", who we soon could start to pet, and feed from our hands directly. After a while, another good 2 weeks later, we visited the farm and Strubbel again, as we did every second day, we, as usual, walked to the mailbox, and this time, this time there was a letter in the mailbox. "For Jody and Billy" was written untidy on the cover.
We couldn't belive our luck, were so excited to finally recive an answer. We quickly took care of Strubbel, with Billy giving him new water and hay, and with me cleaning and taming Strubbel's long tail, and then sat down on the front porch to open the letter at last. Strubbel had curiously lifted his head, looking over to us, as if he was feeling the tension, knowing what this was about.
So we took a deep breath, looked at each other, and then opened the letter.
