Bren nosed at me, his soft velvet muzzle letting me know that in his opinion, we weren't moving fast enough. I laughed. This had been the common theme since he had arrived a few days ago - he wanted to go fast, all the time. The little black gelding was an absolute rocket, the first time I had let him out in the field i had almost been bowled over by the speed of his gallop, and his energy seemed limitless. I was trying to take my time with him, spend a little while on groundwork and getting to know each other, but I'd never met a pony so eager to rush - if he had the ability I swear he'd saddle himself up and shove me on his back. He was attentive and sweet, all his attention focused on me when we were doing these training sessions, which is why it struck me as odd that he'd frozen still in the middle of one.
His ears were pricked and he was facing out of the arena, head high, clearly listening to something I couldn't quite hear out in the mountains. His ears flicked and then he let out an earsplitting whinny.
"Jeez, boy. Easy now." I said, trying to calm him down while clearly having not even a little bit of his attention. He whinnied again and this time I heard an answering whinny. The arena was closed, so I unclipped the lead rope so that Bren wouldn't hurt himself or me. He trotted straight up to the fence, letting out another whinny. The answering call was closer this time, and I turned to look in the same direction Bren was. A gorgeous palomino gelding was cantering down from the foothills, his long mane flying in the wind behind him as he made a beeline for the arena. The whinnies turned to nickers as they got closer, Bren stretching out his neck as far as he could over the arena fence. The wild palomino came right up to the fence, barely sparing a glance for me, and nuzzled his face against Bren's. They'd clearly been friends out in the wild, and it tugged on my heartstrings. As if sensing this, Bren shot me a glance that read "Come on, let him come home too." I sighed and shook my head, before pulling out one of the spare bell ribbons I kept in my pocket at all times. You never knew when they were going to come in handy, but I certainly hadn't expected a wild Teddy to just trot right up to the arena. I walked slowly over to them, giving them plenty of time to freak out or run away from me, but they both blinked at me lazily, happy to lean against each other, completely unbothered as I leaned over and tied the bell ribbon into the palomino's mane. The gelding shook his head as I finished, and raised an eyebrow as the bell jingled merrily. With a snort, the two geldings began to groom each other. I retreated to the bench at the side of the arena with my book - it was the first time Bren had been happy to go slow, and I was happy to let him. I gave up on my book after a while, and just watched the happy pair. They were striking, black and gold contrasting beautifully next to each other in the morning sunlight. The breeze picked up a little and jingled the bell tied in the gelding's mane, the sound carrying across the arena and making both horses' ears twitch. I tried not to think about the palomino gelding, tried not to get my hopes up, but the friendship between the two of them meant that the hope was growing steadily, and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I would cross my fingers and hope beyond hope that the golden gelding would decide to come home with us.
