Come on then lonely one!
I strode through the grass which was beginning to go yellow with the summer heat, and walked straight over to the sweet gelding who had seemingly been left behind by his herd, and gave his head a rub. He pushed his head into my hands and nickered softly, enjoying the attention. There were no other horses in sight and my heart went out to the little guy.
"All alone, huh?" He looked around, his long mane falling into his eyes, before pressing himself harder into me. He began to sniff and then nose at my pocket. I chuckled and pulled out the jelly cubes that I always carried with me. "Here you go, little buddy."
He accepted it happily and munched, making a mess and smearing half eaten jelly down my jeans. I couldn't help but laugh, what a sweet little gelding.
I sighed as I kept fussing him and idly began to tease the knots out of his mane. I didn't really need another horse, especially not with the new foal coming, but.. the thought of this little guy wandering around alone out here was too much to bear, and I'd seen him around enough to know that his herd were all gone. I had an inkling that he came from the same herd as some of my mares, and I'm sure they'd all get along well. I used my fingers to tease away some mud that was caked into his fur, and then I pulled out the ribbons that I always kept in my back pocket, and once I'd untangled his entire mane, I began to weave the ribbons in and out, plaiting them intricately into his long mane. He held still while I did this, although he did snort in curiosity when I pulled out the bell. I let him sniff it before I wove it along the ribbons before tying it all together neatly. The gelding shook his head, jingling the bell. It might not stay in there, there was no telling with these kinds of things, but I could hope. Even if my ribbon didn't stay put, im sure he would find a wonderful home eventually. With time, maybe he'd even find a new herd out here, you never know.
"I have to get back now, little one." I said, before handing over one more jelly cube and turning to leave. I trudged down the path back to the ranch, and couldn't stop myself from turning round to look once more. He was stood, alone, watching me, half hidden amongst the tall yellow grass that was speckled with wildflowers, and my heart went out to him again. I hoped I'd see him again soon, whether he decided to come home with me or not.
